STEMGlow is the first STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Math) mentorship program for girls of color (Guided Learning for Girls of Color) in the Rochester Public School (RPS) district. This program is being supported by an innovator grant awarded by the Women’s Foundation of Minnesota to Isha Kapoor, the founder of STEM Mirror. STEMGlow will go beyond the approach of textbook learning and will allow middle school students to engage in real, hands-on research. The program has been launched as an after-school club in the middle schools in the RPS district in collaboration with the science teachers and the Rochester Regional STEM Fair leadership. Students will receive 1:1 coaching for pursuing a research project and developing leadership skills. They will be paired with a Mayo Clinic-affiliated research mentor. The students will also receive help in buying supplies and material for their research as needed. The goal of this project is to enhance participation in research and STEM activities like science fairs among girls of color.
